Animal Health Careers
Animal care is the primary focus for the dedicated veterinary team. Every day veterinarians, vet interns, licensed veterinary technicians and techs in training, zoo keepers and other animal care staff work hard to ensure that animals are in good health.

Biotechnology Careers
Biotechnology creates drug product, pharmaceuticals, therapies and vaccines, including products to treat cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and autoimmune disorders. Biotechnology is responsible for hundreds of medical diagnostic tests that keep the blood supply safe from HIV and detect other conditions early enough to be successfully treated. Home pregnancy tests are also biotechnology diagnostic products.

Chiropractors, also known as Doctors of Chiropractic or Chiropractic Physicians, diagnose and treat patients whose health problems are associated with the body’s muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems, especially the spine. Learn the education steps needed to enter the field of chiropractic.

Health Information Technician
Every time a patient receives health care, a record is maintained of the observations, medical or surgical interventions, and treatment outcomes. This record includes information that the patient provides concerning his or her symptoms and medical history, the results of examinations, reports of x-rays and laboratory tests, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Technicians assemble patients’ health information, making sure that patients’ initial medical charts are complete, that all forms are completed and properly identified and authenticated, and that all necessary information is in the computer.

Hemodialysis Technician
During hemodialysis, the blood is removed from the patient’s body, cycled through an artificial kidney, and then the blood is returned to the patient. Hemodialysis technicians work together with nurses to provide direct patient care to patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment due to renal failure. The hemodialysis technician also initiates treatment, monitors patient status and vital signs, obtains blood samples, and documents cares provided. The technician is responsible for equipment management, including programming, cleaning and monitoring the hemodialysis machines.

Labor and Delivery Nursing
Labor and delivery nurses care for women who are laboring, having complications of pregnancy or having recently delivered. They assist in the delivery room and provide immediate follow-up care. In order to become a labor and delivery nurse, you will need a nursing degree, as well as continuing education in this specialized field.

Medical Imaging Careers
Medical imaging careers includes a variety of jobs. Radiologic Technologists and Technicians take x-rays and administer non-radioactive materials into patients’ bloodstreams for diagnostic purposes. Some specialize in diagnostic imaging technologies, such as computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Nuclear medicine is the subspecialty of radiology devoted to the imaging, diagnosis and treatment of patients with trace doses of radioactive material.

Medical Laboratory Careers
Clinical laboratory scientists participate in patient care by performing laboratory procedures that assist in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The analyses performed by clinical laboratory scientists include chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, toxicology, blood banking, and molecular procedures. Clinical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.

Ten-year-old Jason was in an accident while riding on his bicycle. Although he survived the accident, it left him with a brain injury. To improve some of his cognitive (thinking) skills, comprehension skills, and coordination, Jason received occupational therapy. Occupational therapy is a treatment that focuses on helping people achieve independence in all areas of their lives. Occupational Therapists work with all age groups and in many differnet settings from schools to hospitals to businesses.

The field of health and fitness personal training is a rapidly growing occupation for individuals who desire a career in a health profession. They provide clients with information and resources in regards to nutrition, weight control and other lifestyle issues.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapists are specialists in evaluating and treating disorders of the human body primarily by physical means. They are responsible for examining the patient or client; evaluating the results; determining goals; and planning, implementing and evaluating a physical therapy program.

Registered Dietician
Dieticians plan food and nutrition programs, and can become specialize such as sports dieticians. Sports and fitness dieticians identify the best eating and drinking strategies to meet an individuals training/competition needs. Anther specialty is clinical dieticians. They work in a hospital setting to identify patients at risk for nutrient deficiencies and to identify patients in need of nutrition counseling and intervention.

Respiratory Therapy
Respiratory Therapists evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. They evaluate and treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people whose lungs are diseased.

Specialty and Rehabilitative Care
After an accident, stroke, chronic illness or hospital stay, continuing health care is often required. Long-term care facilites provide a wide array of health services, including skilled Nursing, Social Workers, Dieticians, Activities; and rehabilitative services such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, IV therapy and Diagnostics. A very satisfying health career can be found helping people as they overcome physical and cognitive challenges in a residential setting.

Speech Language Pathology
Speech-language therapy is the treatment for kids and adults with speech and/or language disorders. A speech disorder refers to a problem with the actual production of sounds, whereas a language disorder refers to a difficulty understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas. Speech-language pathologists, sometimes called speech therapists, assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders.
